Job Applications

Whether you are doing an online application or a paper application, you will need to have similar types of information at your fingertips. It is best to have all the information ahead of time in one place so that as you fill out multiple applications, you will be ready to go.

Besides your personal contact information (address, phone, email, etc.), below is a list of additional types of information you may need. Each application will be different. Some will just ask for basic information but others will be extremely detailed.  Be prepared for it all. See a sample paper application here.

  • Driver’s license number (if you have one)
  • Social security number (memorize this!)
  • Employment history including supervisor’s name, dates worked, position held, salary, reason for leaving and all contact info (address, phone, email)
  • Do you want your current employer to be contacted? Some applications will ask.
  • Volunteer history including supervisor, dates worked, type of work, and all contact info (address, phone, and email)
  • Education: School attended or attending and (expected) graduation date
  • Skills acquired (computer programs, business classes, lifesaving, Red Cross, bilingual, etc.)
  • Three non-family references with full contact info (address, phone and email)
  • Availability (full time, part-time, evenings, weekends, holidays, which weekdays, etc.)

When doing an online application, often you will need to set up an account with a login name and password.  But the types of information a business will need to complete your application will be similar to a paper application. Sometimes they may ask you to upload a resume.

And since you have spent time identifying all this information, it is the perfect time to create a resume. Even with no work experience, doing a one-page resume with your school, volunteering, extracurricular, skills and references, etc. will show the “right stuff” to potential employers.  And show that you are sincere about your interest in a particular position. This resume can also be used for internships, college applications, and volunteer positions plus each new skill/experience can be added to grow your resume.
