The Cary Area Public Library is seeking someone who is passionate about helping the Library and its staff succeed to fill our Technical Services Manager position. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of cataloging practices, library systems, and technology, with excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. This role requires a bachelor’s degree or LTA certification with cataloging experience (MLS/MLIS preferred), along with public library and leadership experience.

What you’ll do:

This role oversees acquisitions, cataloging, and processing of materials, maintains the library’s circulation system, and ensures accurate records. The manager also supervises staff, manages departmental operations and budgeting, and collaborates across departments to support library services. Strong analytical, organizational, and leadership skills are essential, along with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Requirements

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or LTA certificate/certification and two (2) years of previous cataloging experience required. MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution preferred.
  • Three (3) years of public library experience and two (2) years of leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of current library cataloging and classification practices.
  • Demonstrates a high level of attention to detail.

Key Competencies

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite 
    • Knowledge of Polaris Client is preferred.
    • Knowledge of library materials, technology, practices, and library laws.

Availability

The preferred schedule for this position is Monday-Friday, 8 am-4 pm, along with availability on nights and weekends is required. 

Pay

$58,577-$73,221, depending on qualifications
Benefits include health insurance, vision, and dental, as well as paid leave. CAPL is an IMRF Library.

Are you looking for a part-time job that allows you to give back to your community?

Then consider applying for a Circulation Associate II position! Our Associates assist patrons at our service points and help maintain a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment. Circulation Associates II are often the first to interact with patrons, so being friendly, approachable, and able to communicate clearly and effectively is essential. We also provide technology-related assistance, so familiarity with computers and devices (tablets, smartphones, eReaders) is required. This role also includes regularly serving as Person-in-Charge and assisting with passport applications, requiring strong decision-making skills and attention to procedures.

The primary responsibilities of this position include providing excellent customer service by assisting patrons in person and on the phone, managing patron accounts, and supporting program registration and study room reservations. Associates check materials in and out, process holds and deliveries, and provide basic readers’ advisory, reference, and technology assistance. Additional responsibilities include accepting passport applications according to Department of State guidelines and serving as Person-in-Charge as assigned, in alignment with library policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required, Two (2) years of circulation experience or equivalent in experience.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both in writing and orally.
  • Provide courteous and friendly service to patrons and staff.
  • Willingness to help the Library become a more inclusive environment for staff and patrons.

Hours

A part-time year-round position is available, averaging 26 hours per week. All Circulation Associates are required to work one weekend per month.

Pay
$15.00-$18.25 per hour, depending on qualifications.
